I never did tell what happened to our summer tomato experiment.
Julia and I learned that while tomatoes will grow like crazy in the Florida summer, the night temps are too hot and cause blossom drop. If the flowers keep falling off, they can’t pollinate and turn into tomatoes.
We’re going to try again in fall with the same set up. Because we had that down pat.
Here is how we started in June 6, 2007.

This picture is from July 18, 2007 — 6 weeks ish later. The trellis we ended up making was about 7ft high.

By the time blight strated creeping up from the bottom and killed the plants off in mid August, the tomatoes were up past the trellis and going taller than the roof of our house!
It was a fun preschool science experiment and we got a good crop of caterpillars. So Julia and I both had a good time. We’ll see how the fall tomatoes turn out.
