Spring 2008 Planning

We had a nice Thanksgiving weekend. Saw a lot of the in-laws. But now that I’m at Sunday night and facing my week ahead, I realize that I’m going to fall behind if I don’t make some serious headway tomorrow with the garden. Here’s my timetable so I can be ready to plant out in [...]

Pear Walnut Gingerbread

On with the quick bread theme!
I decided to use up some pears and baked this recipe from Vegetarian Times. Since I have to take it to Thanksgiving tomorrow, I’m left it mostly like it is and am taking some vanilla ice cream on the side in case the kids aren’t keen on gingerbread.
Later I figure [...]

Apple Walnut Bread

A half jar of applesauce in the fridge needed using up and I suppose I’m in a fall quickbread mood after the pumpkin one last week. So here’s an apple quick bread.

Preheat oven at 350 deg. Mix all these together in a bowl:

1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or mix of white and whole wheat pastry flour)

I posted my original recipe to allrecipes.com ages ago and while I still make it that way sometimes, today I made this variation with walnuts and dried cranberries (Craisins).

1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon [...]

Toad in the… Lettuce?

Started fall cleaning today and in between going down my kitchen checklist, I spent some time with kid. In the afternoon, we putzed around the garden tidying it up and laying out boards for the edges of where the mulch will stop. Then I dragged out junk leaning on my concrete wall.  She built a [...]

Pests

Julia and I pulled up all the pepper plants this afternoon. They were scraggly and looked like something was nibbling on them. Spouse told me he saw an opossum running across the yard two nights in a row but forgot to tell me until I complained about my scraggly peppers. Tonight he saw the opossum [...]

Soggy Day Dreaming

It’s been raining cats and dogs. Not much to do in the yard with child other than poke about for lizards and mushrooms… and slime mold. My favorite two shots today were the anole that actually held still for a minute on the bean plant…

…and Julia showing me a tiny mushroom she found.

The slime mold [...]

Hope your Halloween was a goodie!
Mine was fun. Apart from taking child trick-or-treating, we carved our first pumpkins.  Like my child, I’d never done it before so it was new to both of us.
The seeds from the “baby” pumpkins I saved to see if we can grow some for next year.
The seeds from the  big [...]
