We had nice, cool, crisp fall weather today so Julia and I spent about an hour and a half in the yard. We were scrubbing out our fridge drawers and kitchen trash can. Then she found a mess of feathers that she called “Treasure!” and I called “A bird got eaten by a cat!” in my head. After the feather hunt, she watched me dig and would “rescue” any earthworms she found and relocate them to the existing raised bed.
My current project is to bring this sketch into reality for a square foot gardening style raised bed vegetable garden.

Here’s where we are starting from:

After weeks of debate, I decided I’m impatient and I’m obsessed. I ordered some bed components yesterday morning and today I decided to just hand spade the garden. It isn’t like it is huge and it isn’t like I can’t take some exercise. So forget renting the tiller and carry on! With Julia’s attention span, I managed to get one part done that is about 3 ft wide and 8 ft long.

Now I just have to do it again about six or seven times and all the paths will be dug out and I can get pavers to edge with and mulch to fill in the rest.
